Supplements To Include In Your Nutrition Plan

Ensuring you include the right supplements and minerals in your daily diet is essential for continued good health. Although a balanced and varied nutrition plan is the best source of vitamins and minerals, modern diets don’t always provide us with the nutrients we need.

In this blog, we’ll be taking a look at some of the best supplements to take to give your health a boost.

Multivitamins

Choosing a good quality multivitamin can help to boost your daily intake of essential vitamins and minerals with one daily tablet. Essential vitamins include A, B, C, D, E, and K, while the minerals that are essential for health include calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, and zinc.

Many multivitamins include a percentage of your recommended daily requirements, with the assumption that the remainder of the requirements are to be met by nutrient-dense foods.

Vitamin D

From promoting calcium and phosphate absorption to reducing inflammation, cell growth, and immune function, vitamin D plays a vital role in the body.

Although vitamin D is available naturally from a few food sources, most people meet their requirements through exposure to sunlight. However, factors such as seasonal changes, pollution, sunscreen, old age and having dark skin can reduce the amount of vitamin D that is absorbed into your body. This can sometimes result in a deficiency.

In order to maintain healthy levels of vitamin D, a low-dose supplement of between 400-800 IU is ideal. If you have been diagnosed with a deficiency, you may need to take higher doses.

Magnesium

Magnesium is a mineral that plays a crucial role in the body, supporting muscle and nerve function. It helps to regulate our blood pressure and mood, as well as contributing towards healthy bones.

Experts suggest that many people in the US aren’t getting enough magnesium from their diet, which is contributing to a whole host of health issues including high blood pressure, heart disease, memory problems and certain cancers. Supplements provide a great way to boost magnesium intake, but it’s important to avoid taking too much.

Omega 3 oils

Experts recommend including 8 ounces of oily fish or shellfish in a healthy weekly diet. Adding omega-3 supplements like fish oil, fish liver oil, or flaxseed oil can also help maintain optimal levels.

The body uses omega-3 fatty acids to control inflammation, which can lead to various health problems. Research suggests that omega-3s may lower the risk of heart disease-related death, slightly reduce stroke risk, decrease triglyceride levels, and ease rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.

Probiotics

Probiotics are great for maintaining our gut health and helping our bodies absorb nutrients from food. Probiotic supplements can create a healthy balance of ‘good’ bacteria in the gut, which can support healthy immune function, proper brain health, inflammation regulation and weight management, as well as counteracting some of the harmful side effects of taking common medications.
