PRP: everything you need to know about the power of this growth factor treatment

PRP, also known as platelet-rich plasma, is blood plasma with five times the amount of platelets found in regular circulating blood. Platelets play a very crucial role in the body, which is to promote clotting. PRP utilises the rejuvenating power of platelets together with your growth factors to encourage collagen and elastin production. Growth factor is a naturally occurring substance that is synthesised and stored in the body. It stimulates proliferation, cellular growth and healing.
How does PRP work?
To make PRP, the doctor will have to draw your blood. To extract PRP, the doctor uses a centrifuge that separates the blood into two layers: the plasma layer and the red blood cell layer. The plasma layer is concentrated in platelets and it has a gold tint to it. The plasma layer, also known as plasma-rich fibrin matrix, is injected back into the skin.
What does PRP contain?
PRP contains plasma and platelets, of course, but that is not all. Platelets contain numerous growth factors that help rejuvenate the skin. They include:
– Fibroblast Growth Factor Beta [FGF- β ], which helps in tissue repair, collagen production and cell growth.
– Platelet Derived Growth Factor [PDGF], which aids in collagen production, cell growth, and generation and repair of blood vessels.
– Insulin Growth Factor [IGF], which regulates the growth of cells.
– Epidermal Growth Factor[EGF], which promotes wound healing, angiogenesis, and it also supports epithelial cell growth.
– Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor [VEGF], which promotes angiogenesis and wound healing.
– Transforming Growth Factor Beta [TGF- β], which promotes wound healing and aids in the growth and neogenesis of vascular endothelial cells as well as epithelial cells.
Advantages of PRP therapy
The first advantage of this treatment is that it is natural. PRP is created using your blood, so you don’t have to worry about any side effects caused by allergic reactions. Other than that, PRP offers numerous benefits to the skin. It promotes collagen and elastin fibre production, which is essential in maintaining skin elasticity and suppleness. PRP acts as a bio-stimulator in the dermis and epidermis, causing skin regeneration and repair. This treatment also helps correct discolouration, minimises wrinkles and fines line, fades dark spots and acne scars and improves skin texture.
